Evidence-based policy in South Africa

Introducing the Sustainable Development Goals Initiative

The Sustainable Development Goals Initiative (SDGi) represents a dynamic partnership between The Presidency of South Africa, University of Pretoria, Stellenbosch University, African Monitor, and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

SDGi’s key objective is for the South African government to increasingly utilise the evidence-based recommendations of the Policy and Research Services Unit in the Presidency in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the National Development Plan 2030.

SDGi aims to:

  • Bridge the gap between academia and policymakers by harnessing the expertise of South Africa’s 26 public universities to assist PRS with its evidence needs;
  • Strengthen the capacity of PRS to drive evidence-based policy development through collaboration and knowledge-sharing;
  • Support the inclusive dialogue between governmental stakeholders on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
