Pact for the Future: its take on evidence-based policy-making

27 September 2024
At the 2024 UN Summit of the Future, world leaders adopted the historic Pact for the Future, committing to 56 actions addressing global challenges. The Pact’s ambitious agenda spans peace, digital cooperation, climate, and more, setting a new standard for international collaboration.

A historical moment for the international community following the adoption of the Pact for the Future by world leaders during the Summit of Future, which took place in New York at the United Nations headquarters. The Pact is said to be the most wide-ranging international agreement in many years, covering entirely new areas and issues. The Pact includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations. It also covers a broad range of issues including peace and security, sustainable development, climate change, digital cooperation, human rights, gender, youth and future generations, and the transformation of global governance.

World leaders committed to 56 actions, one of them (Action 28) speaking to seizing the opportunities presented by science, technology and innovation for the benefit of people and planet. This action links closely with the work of SDGi through its promotion of evidence-based policy-making. Action 28 states that ‘we will be guided by the principles of equity and solidarity, and promote the responsible and ethical use of science, technology and innovation. We decide to: (a) foster and promote an open, fair and inclusive environment for scientific and technological development and cooperation worldwide, including through actively building trust in science and global collaboration on innovation; (b) increase the use of science, scientific knowledge and scientific evidence in policy-making and ensure that complex global challenges are addressed through interdisciplinary collaboration; (c) encourage talent mobility and circulation, including through educational programmes, and support developing countries to retain talent and prevent a brain drain while providing suitable educational and working conditions and opportunities for the workforce.
